Etymology of Zanthoxylum:
Gk. xanthos = yellow; xylon = wood. Several species of this genus have yellow heartwood. The roots of some species contain a yellow dye (Jackson).

Named after Joseph Burtt Davy (1870-1940) who founded what is now the National Hedrbarium in Pretoria
