For Carl (Karl) Ludwig Philipp Zeyher (1799–1858), German botanist, botanical collector and adventurer, who arrived in the Cape in 1822 and collected in South Africa for 22 years. He was dogged by misfortune – he was not paid his share of his Cape collection with FW Sieber (1822–1824). His Uitenhage-Clanwilliam collection (1825–1825), sent to his uncle, who died, was procured by the Baden government. A large part of his 1829–1833 (Eastern Cape) collection with Ecklon was destroyed by fire. The ship carrying his 1838 collection (Uitenhage) was wrecked and the cargo lost. He is remembered best for his co-authorship with Christian Friedrich Ecklon of Enumeratio Plantarum Africae Australis. His last years were lived in poverty and he died of smallpox.
