Etymology of Zygophyllum:
Gk. zygon = a yoke; phyllum = leaf. The leaves are usually bifoliolate – the two leaflets are as if ‘yoked together’.

Named after Johan Wilhelm Heinrich Giess (1910-2000), botanist and collector of Nambian plants
