Gk. aer = air; angos, aggeion, angeion = vessel; probably ‘alluding to the long (blood-)vessel-like spur of the lip in the type species’ (Reichenbach, 1865).

From the Latin luteus = 'yellow', and alba = 'white'; the flowers are two-toned.
