Etymology of Anoda:
Gk. anodia = without joint; from La. nodus = joint, node (Cavendish); Gk. an- = without; odon = tooth (Jackson). ‘The flowering stem lacks nodes, unlike other related genera’ (Cavendish). Jackson states the second option, saying this is more consistent as ‘the leaves do (not bear) teeth as do other genera’.

From the Latin cristata / cristatus meaning ‘tufted’ or 'comb-like' as in resembling the comb on a chicken
