Etymology of Avicennia:
After Avicenna, 980-1037, famous Arabian philosopher and physician, born near Bukhara; wrote the standard medical text "Canon of Medicine".
Etymology of officinalis:
The officina was the building, usually an out-building, in medieval monasteries where medical monks prepared medicaments and pharmaceutical preparations. Thus plants with this epithet have been used medicinally.
