Etymology of Bonamia:
For François Bonamy (1710–1786), French physician and botanist, from a long line of apothecaries. He received a doctorate in medicine in 1735 from the Royal University of Nantes and became professor of botany where he taught for over 40 years, during which time he became university president (rector) and dean of the faculty. He was also a member of the Royal Society of Medicine. He established a garden of apothecaries (medicinal plants) at Nantes and taught botany for free or next to nothing to those who visited the garden.
