Etymology of Brachycorythis:
Gr. brachys = short; kopus, korys = helmet; referring to the strongly cucullate perianth, which may sometimes vaguely resemble a helmet (Lindley, 1838).
Etymology of gerrardii:
Named after naturalist and traveller William Tyrer Gerrard (?-1866) who collected in KwaZulu-Natal in 1860.
