Etymology of Carex:
La. caricis, carex = reeds, sedges, rushes. Possibly also from La. carere = absent, having flaws. In some species the upper florescent spikes are without seeds because the spikes are male.

From the Latin austro = 'south' and africana = 'Africa'; i.e. from South Africa
