Etymology of Centaurea:
Gk. kentaurieon = in Greek mythology the centaur Chiron (Kheiron) was known for his knowledge and skill with medicine. The common name ‘Centaury’ is sometime incorrectly used for this genus, although this refers to the unrelated plant genus Centaurium.
