Etymology of Cheilanthes:
Gk. keilo = lip; anthos = flower; referring to the liplike false indusium that covers the sporangia. The sorus is marginal in these ferns.

Named after Sir Rawson William Rawson (1812-1899), a naturalist and cColonial Secretary at the Cape Colony from 1854 - 1864, who worked and published on ferns
