Gk. koleos = a sheath; alluding to the filaments being connected at the base, which sheaths the style. The stamens are enclosed in the tubular corolla.

From the Latin latus meaning ‘wide’; and folius meaning ‘leaf’; i.e. the plant is broad-leafed
