Etymology of Cullen:
For William Cullen (1710–1790). Scottish physician, apothecary, chemist and academic. He studied pharmacology, medicine and chemistry at the universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. After a short period of medical practice, he held the positions of lecturer in chemisty (1747) and professor of the practice of medicine (1751) both at Glasgow University, and professor of chemistry and medicine at the University of Edinburgh (1755). During his career, he was appointed president of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, and helped found the Royal Medical Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He wrote a number of books including First Lines of the Practice of Physick, for the Use of Students (1777) and A Treatise on Materia Medica (1789).
