Etymology of Cynodon:
Gk. kynos, kyon = dog; -odon = toothed; referring to the sheathed tips of the sharp, hard scales of the plant’s rhizomes and stolons or the tooth-like buds of the rhizome.
Etymology of transvaalensis:
From the former Transvaal Province of South Africa; now Gauteng Province. Trans meaning 'across', and vaal refers to the Vaal River, it being on the far side of the river from the Cape.
