Etymology of Danthonia:
For Étienne Danthoine (1739–1794), French botanist and agrostologist from Marseilles, student of the grasses of Provence. At the time of his death he was the pharmacist in the military hospital in Grasse. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences of Marseilles and wrote articles on grasses, bedstraws and (published posthumously) gall wasps.
