Etymology of Devia:
For Miriam Phoebe de Vos (1912–2005), South African botanist, plant collector and botany professor. She obtained a DSc (1940) from Stellenbosch University where she worked for most of her career, during which time she collected some 2 400 specimens and had a particular interest in cyto-taxonomy and embryology, especially of Iridaceae. She is acknowledged for her scientific contributions to the morphology and anatomy of South African plants, especially her revisions of Syringodea, Romulea, Ixia, Crocosmia, Duthiastrum and Chasmanthe. A talented artist, she illustrated three colour plates of Romulea for The Flowering Plants of Africa (Volume 29, 1952). In 1974 she was awarded the Havenga prize for Biology from the South African Academy of Arts and Sciences.
