Probably for Johann Friedrich Gottlieb Dietrich (1765–1850), German botanist and later professor of botany at Jena University. At just 20, while on a botanical excursion, he met Goethe who, together with Duke Karl August of Weimar, gave him a scientific education in Jena. They also sponsored trips abroad to Kew Gardens, Huntington and Chelsea Gardens. From 1792–1801 he worked for Duke Licher Gartner (becoming his gardener from 1794) in Weimar. From 1801–1845 he was appointed the duke’s services inspector (director) of botanical gardens in Wilhelmsthal in Eisenach. Dietrich was awarded the title of grand ducal council, he obtained his PhD and became professor of botany. He authored a number of books on botany and horticulture.
