Etymology of Echium:
Gk. echion = from echis = viper; the nutlets appearing to represent a viper’s head. A name used by Dioscorides for a plant used to cure snake bites.
Etymology of schlechteri:
Named in honour of the German Rudolf Schlecter (1872-1925) and his brother Max (1874-1960), renowned plant collectors from South Africa.
