Etymology of Erysimum:
Gk. eryomai = to help or save; referring to the centuries-old belief that the plant had medicinal properties.
Etymology of officinale:
The officina was the building, usually an out-building, in medieval monasteries where medical monks prepared medicaments and pharmaceutical preparations. Thus plants with this epithet have been used medicinally.
