Etymology of Escallonia:
For Antonio Escallón y Flórez (1739–1819), physician, explorer, student and botanical associate and friend of Spanish botanist Jóse Celastino Mutís in Colombia who named the genus Escallonia in his honour in 1821. He was also an advisor to the viceroy Pedro de la Cerda Massia. He was from Spain and travelled and collected plants in South America, then settled in New Granada (present-day Colombia).
