For Johann Friedrich Gustav von Eschscholtz (1793–1831), an Estonian surgeon, zoologist, entomologist and botanist. He was professor of anatomy at the University of Dorpat and director of the Zoological Cabinet from 1819–1828. Eschscholtz served as physician and naturalist aboard the Russian circumnavigational expeditionary ship Rurik under the command of Otto von Kotzebue on two voyages, 1815–1818 and 1823–1826, exploring in the Pacific, Alaska and California. On the first he became a close friend of the botanist Adelbert von Chamisso. He was the author of System der Akalephen (1829) and the Zoologischer Atlas (1829–1833). His insect collections are in the zoological museums of Moscow, Tartu and Helsinki.
