For Antoine René Gaillard de Charentonneau (1719–1789), French magistrate, patron of botany, naturalist, amateur botanist and member of the Académie des Sciences. Antoine René was an officer of the courts from 1740–1771 and from 1774–1779. He also received seeds of plants from the French colonies that he both cultivated himself and shared with other botanists. At one stage he owned the castle of Charentonneau but was seemingly forced to sell it around the time of the French Revolution.
