Etymology of Gemmaria:
La. gemma = bud or eye of a plant, or a jewel; -aria = pertaining to; referring to the beauty of some of these species such as the (now) Strumaria ammocharis.
Etymology of karoopoortensis:
From the Khoisan/Khoekhoe word garo /karo / !garo-b = 'desert' or 'hard'; referring to the inland semi-desert Karoo region of South Africa; and the Afrikaans poort = a lowlying 'gateway' through the mountains
