Etymology of Genista:
La. genista = the Latin name for the broom shrub, possibly from Celtic gen or French genet = bush. Invasive plants with wide-branching root systems and thick tenacious stems. Because of their brush-like foliage, many of this species were used for sweeping in the 15th century.
