Etymology of Gussonea:
For Giovanni Gussone (1787–1866), Italian botanist and physician. He studied medicine at the University of Naples (1811) but abandoned his medical career and instead devoted his life to botany. He became director of the Botanical Garden of Boccadifalco, near Palermo (1817–1827), later director of the Botanical Garden of Caserta, Naples, and in 1861 he became emeritus professor of botany at the University of Naples. He made many expeditions in Italy, collecting for his herbarium some 14 000 Italian plant species, now housed in the Royal Botanical Gardens at Naples. He authored Catalogus Plantarum (1821), Plantae Rariores (1826), Florae Siculae Prodromus (1827–1828), Flora Sicula (1829) and Florae Siculae Synopsis (1842–1844).
