Etymology of Gymnosporia:
Gk. gymnos = naked; spora = seed; referring to the seeds that remain attached and exposed when the fruits open. The seeds are exposed (naked) when capsules split open. Technically this is not 100 per cent correct, because the seeds have arils that enclose them totally or partially or are reduced to a rim at the base (G. tenuispina) (Marie Jordaan).
Etymology of woodii:
Named after John Medley Wood (1827-1915) farmer, trader and botanist in Kwa-Zulu Natal, curator of Durban Botanic Garden from 1882 and founder of the Natal Herbarium
