Etymology of Habenaria:
La. habena = a strap or thong, reins; -aria = possessing; alluding to the orchid’s long spur, ‘from the long, strap-like divisions of the petals and lip’ (Willdenow, 1805).
Etymology of schlechteri:
Named in honour of the German Rudolf Schlecter (1872-1925) and his brother Max (1874-1960), renowned plant collectors from South Africa.
