Etymology of Hammeria:
For Steven Allen Hammer (1951– ), US pianist, plant collector and explorer, horticulturist and specialist on Mesembs especially Conophytum, lecturer and research fellow at the University of Cape Town, author of The Genus Conophytum (1993), Lithops (Treasures of the Veld) (1999), and a contributor to Mesembs of the World (1998) and many scientific papers. He is regarded internationally as one of the foremost authorities on Mesembs, manages a ‘botanic garden disguised as a nursery’ and has done extensive field work, especially in Namaqualand. He became a Fellow of the Cactus and Succulent Society in 1997 and is assistant journal editor of the US Cactus and Succulent Journal.
Etymology of meleagris:
From the Latin meleagris = 'guinea-fowl' or 'turkey'. Perhaps referring to a pattern on the plant.
