Short etymology:
An unexplained name. Gk. herminium = bedpost; Linnaeus also mentions hermes = mercury, ermineus – white like ermine; possibly referring to the stunted staminodia that stand on each side of the anther or referring to the resemblance of the inflorescence to a carved bedpost – the tubers represent the knobs of antique beds.
