Etymology of Hiernia:
For William Philip Hiern (1839–1925), British mathematician, botanist, bryologist and plant collector. He studied at Cambridge University (1857–1861) and later at Oxford (1886). He lived in Devon as a country squire with many public duties, and it is here that he developed an interest in botany, collecting 15 new species, and publishing 50 works, many in the Journal of Botany. His major works were A Monograph on Ebenaceae (1872) and the dicotyledon section he wrote for Catalogue of the African Plants Collected by Dr Friedrich Welwitsch in 1853–61 (Volume 1). He was a Fellow of the Linnaean and Royal societies (1903). His herbarium specimens and manuscripts are preserved in the National History Museum, London and the Royal Botanical Kew Gardens.
