Etymology of Hoffmannseggia:
For Johann Centurius, Count Von Hoffmansegg (1766–1849), German botanist, entomologist and ornithologist. He studied at the universities of Leipzig and Göttingen before travelling through Hungary, Austria and Italy (1795–1796) and Portugal (1797–1801) where he met Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link (1767–1851). They co-authored Flore Portugaise (Flora of Portugal), which remained a standard work for a long time. He sent a large collection of plant and animal specimens to Johann Karl Wilhelm Illiger (1775–1813), a German entomologist and zoologist living in Brunswick. Hoffmansegg worked in Berlin from 1804–1816 where he founded the Zoological Museum in 1809. He became a member of the city’s Academy of Science in 1815.
Etymology of sandersonii:
Named after John Sanderson (1820-1881), journalist, trader and draughtsman. He was editor of the Natal Times and frequently sent seeds to Hooker at Kew and Harvey in Dublin.
