Indigo is derived from the La. indicus, Gk. indikos, referring to India; La. ferax = bearing. Indigo is blue dye (cf I. tinctoria).

Straggling, suberect perennial to 40 cm. Leaves digitately 3-foliolate, leaflets lanceolate, shortly hairy, the hairs c. perpendicular to the midrib above; stipules subulate. Flowers in racemes on robust peduncles, bright red, back of standard petal hairy. July--Nov. Lowland fynbos, c. 100--300 m, SW (Cape Peninsula).
