Indigo is derived from the La. indicus, Gk. indikos, referring to India; La. ferax = bearing. Indigo is blue dye (cf I. tinctoria).

From the Latin retro = 'backwards' and flexus = ‘bent' or 'curved’; i.e. bent backwards
