Gk. eiresione = a wreath or staff entwined with strips of wool; referring to the (hairy) trichomecovered flowers or possibly the woolly appearance of the seed.

Referring to its occurrence on, and initial collection from, the island of Java, with the Latin suffix -ana = ‘a connection’
