Etymology of Jatropha:
Gk. iatros = physician; trophe = food, nutrition. Hugh Glen comments that, ‘some species have medicinal value, but most are poisonous.’ (In 2005, Western Australia banned J. gossypiifolia, as it is invasive and highly toxic to humans and animals.)
Etymology of schlechteri:
Named in honour of the German Rudolf Schlecter (1872-1925) and his brother Max (1874-1960), renowned plant collectors from South Africa.
