Etymology of Loranthus:
Gk. loron = a thong; anthos = a flower, hence ‘strap-flower’. This group of parasitic plants has been split into many genera but could be recognised in the field by its strap-like flowers.
Etymology of woodii:
Named after John Medley Wood (1827-1915) farmer, trader and botanist in Kwa-Zulu Natal, curator of Durban Botanic Garden from 1882 and founder of the Natal Herbarium
