Etymology of Marattia:
For Giovanni Francesco Maratti (1704–1777), Italian Benedictine monk and botanist with a special interest in the flora of Rome and Lasio (central Italy). He entered the abbey of Vallombrozskom in 1721, taking his vows the following year, and completed his studies at the monastery of San Michele di Passignano. He studied under Bruno Tozzi (1656–1743), a highly respected botanist and mycologist. In 1739 Maratti became abbot of the sanctuary of the Virgin Mary Gallorskoy and in 1747 professor of botany and medicine at the University of Rome and director of the botanical gardens of Rome, which, at that stage, were badly neglected. During the next 30 years he enriched the garden with new species he discovered during his explorations in the vicinity of Rome and through plant exchanges with his many contacts in other cities. He wrote papers on a variety of subjects, and his work Flora Roma (Flora of Rome) was published posthumously (1822).
