Etymology of Megaclinium:
Gk. mega = wide, large; klinion = little bed; referring to the flattened inflorescence.
Etymology of sandersonii:
Named after John Sanderson (1820-1881), journalist, trader and draughtsman. He was editor of the Natal Times and frequently sent seeds to Hooker at Kew and Harvey in Dublin.
