Etymology of Melianthus:
Gk. meli, La. mel = honey; anthos = flower. The honey flowers ‘contain abundant nectar, but, judging by their stink, I would not expect edible honey! ‘Kruidjie-roer-my-nie’ (WPU Jackson).
Etymology of gariepinus:
Named after the Orange (Gariep) River on the northern boundary of South Africa from where this species was found
