Etymology of Melianthus:
Gk. meli, La. mel = honey; anthos = flower. The honey flowers ‘contain abundant nectar, but, judging by their stink, I would not expect edible honey! ‘Kruidjie-roer-my-nie’ (WPU Jackson).

From the Latin insignis = 'remarkable or outstanding'
