Etymology of Melica:
La. meli = honey, sweetness, pleasant thing; -ica = belonging to. Ancient Italian melica, meliga = sorghum; refers to the sweetness of the stem. The derivation is uncertain, and other possibilities have been suggested.
Etymology of caffrorum:
From the Latin caffrorum referring to British Kaffraria, the name given to the area between the Kei and Keiskamma rivers in the latter half of the 19th century
