Etymology of Metalasia:
Gk. meta- = meaning reverse; lasios = shaggy, woolly. The leaves are twisted, rolled upward, to present the woolly side of the leaf from the top to the bottom.
Etymology of gnaphalodes:
From the Greek gnaphalon = ‘hank of wool’ and oides = ‘in the form of’; referring to the genus Gnaphalium, a kind of cottonwood
