Etymology of Mimosa:
Gk. mimos = a mimic. The plant is sensitive to light, heat and movement. When touched, this ‘sensitive plant’ will collapse its long, thin leaves in unison as if wilted. Each leaf ‘mimics’ the other.

From the Latin longus = ‘long’ and the Latin folius = ‘leaf’
