Etymology of Mystacidium:
Gk. mystax = moustache (hence mystacine, fringed or striped in a moustache-like manner); -idion = diminutive; probably from the papillosebarbate lateral segments of the rostellum of the type species.

From Greek a- = 'without' and phyllon = 'leaf'; referring to it's leafless habit
