Etymology of Neesenbeckia:
For Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck (1776–1858), German botanist, plant collector, physician and professor of botany at Erlangen (1817), Bonn (1818–1830) and Breslau (1831). He was a prolific author in numerous fields and described about 7 000 plant species, almost as many as Linnaeus. His special interest was fungi. In later life he became involved in radical politics and became president of the workers’ union in conflict with the government, resulting in him losing his professorship and pension. His resulting poverty forced him to sell his library and herbarium of some 80 000 sheets to pay off debts. He was president of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and his last act was to admit Charles Darwin as a member.
