For Nicholas Edward Brown (1849–1934), English plant taxonomist and authority on succulents. He worked for Kew Gardens, becoming assistant keeper in 1909 and held the post until 1914. Although he never visited South Africa, he made a considerable contribution toward the taxonomy of South African plants, particularly Asclepiadaceae, Aizoaceae, Labiatae, Mesembryanaceae and other Cape plants, with publications in the Kew Bulletin and Flora Capensis. He revised the genus Mesembryanthemeum in 1931.
