Etymology of Notosceptrum:
Gk. notos = south; skeptron = regal staff, staff or stick. Some species have erect stems at the top of which are elongated inflorescence with stalkless flowers. With imagination this could be a ‘royal sceptre or staff’.

From the Ancient Greek βραχύς brakhús = 'short' and stachys = 'spike', typically referring to a short spike (inflorescence) of flowers.
