Etymology of Oenothera:
Gk. Oenothera, derived from Gk. oenos = wine; thera = to catch, hunt, pursue, seek, imbibe. La. Oenothera = a plant whose juices may cause sleep. The roots of O. biennis were supposed to, variously, be edible, smell of wine, be used to flavour wine, give one a thirst for wine or, when the juices were drunk with wine, cause sleep.
