Etymology of Oxyanthus:
From the Greek oxys, sharp-pointed (second meaning); anthos, flower, "in reference to the acute teeth of the calyx and segments of the corolla (Sonder in F.C.).
Etymology of gerrardii:
Named after naturalist and traveller William Tyrer Gerrard (?-1866) who collected in KwaZulu-Natal in 1860.
