For Carolus Johannes Pentz, 18th-century Swedish botanist, author of De Diosma (Dissertatio Botanica de Diosma) (1797), and a student of Carl Peter Thunberg who published the genus in 1800.

Named in honour of English botanist Thomas Cooper (1815-1913). He collected many plants in the Drakensberg mountains
